The Guardian Gear™ Pink or Blue Plaid Dog Car Seat Belt consists of two main parts. The vest part works as a harness. The chest and neck area is padded for comfort and so that pressure is evenly distributed in the case of a sudden stop. The other part of the dog car seat belt is the tether. The tether can be removed from the vest part to allow you to attach a leash for walking. Or when it is attached, the other end buckles directly into the seat belt receiptacle of your car (see below).

This buckle works in most vehicles but does not work in Saabs, Volvos, or Ford Explorers. The tether is adjustable in length. Keep the tether of the dog car seat belt short for safety or long (about 2 feet) to allow your dog to move around in the car. Please note, the 2 foot tether may cause the dog car seat belt to slide from your dog's side a bit when he stands, but this is okay. If 2 feet seems too short, remember that the shorter the tether, the less your dog will get tossed around in a car accident.
